Matthijs Bossong

Head of Clinical Research at Bedrocan

Matthijs Bossong, PhD. is Head of Clinical Research at Bedrocan, the world’s most experienced producer of standardized medicinal cannabis. Since his graduation in Biomedical Sciences at Utrecht University, he has gained great expertise in the field of neuropsychopharmacology. Bossong obtained his PhD in Utrecht in 2012 for his thesis entitled ‘Role of the endocannabinoid system in human brain functions relevant for psychiatric disorders’, in which he investigated the acute effects of cannabis on the brain using various neuroimaging techniques. As a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Psychiatry of King’s College London, Matthijs spent three years on the neurobiology of psychotic disorders and investigated the brain effects of potential new antipsychotic drugs such as cannabidiol. Between 2014 and 2023, Matthijs was Assistant Professor at the Department of Psychiatry of the University Medical Center Utrecht and conducted research on cannabis, psychosis and new antipsychotic treatments, supported by various personal research grants. In 2022, as an Assistant Professor at Leiden University, he also managed a pharmacological neuroimaging project on manipulating nocebo effects. Over the years, Bossong has published more than 65 scientific papers in the fields of cannabis, psychosis and pharmacology, and has given many lectures at (inter)national conferences, MSc programs and various postgraduate and training courses. He is a registered pharmacologist with the Dutch Pharmacological Society.
